The Better Way is born, and it’s beautiful
… and how I realised we don’t even need the Hippocratic Oath
Apologies for not posting for the last week. I and the team took a couple of days off to recharge after the marathon run of getting ready for, and running, the Better Way Conference. Maybe you were there and we met – maybe you tuned in online, or maybe this is the first time you heard about it.
Either way, I wish I could bottle the essence of the entire event and share it with you – because I would say it was and is the best medicine I know of to heal body, mind and spirit. If you are someone who has felt isolated within your community, as the only person you know questioning the narrative, let me tell you now, there are thousands of us at your back and to each side of you, holding the line for truth and a better way.
Hundreds of people attended the conference in person, and thousands more tuned in online, discovering that they were in fact part of a historic and powerful grassroots movement. From beginning to end, the Better Way Conference was enlightening, moving, challenging, invigorating and overbrimming with hope, humanity and love. You could feel the love – even those tuning online commented they could feel it.
In the foyer above the conference hall, people of all ages and all walks of life shared hugs and conversations with their heroes – from Dr Geert van den Bossche and Dr Robert Malone to Drs Ryan Cole and Alexandra Henrion Caude. Critics may attempt to dismiss this event as an echo chamber – or, as Vice magazine put it, ‘the Davos of COVID conspiracy theorists’. But there were differing views that inspired energetic debates, varying opinions on how to move forward – and all of us basked in that rarest of phenomena in the modern age: respectful disagreement and constructive conversation.
This was real science: courageous inquiry in the pursuit of true knowledge. As each conversation unfolded, I felt like I was seeing the better way already in action. So many brilliant ideas, so many possibilities for how we can move forward and co-create our positive future.
One thing particularly stood out for me, and that was hearing Professor Dolores’ Cahill speak about the law. We are led to believe the law is complicated, but as Dolores explained, it is breathtakingly simple: act in honour, do no harm. As this sunk in, I realised that there was no need for the Hippocratic oath; there was no need for any rules or regulations of any sort. When you have this one law heard and adhered to, it is all we ever need to live by in order to be responsible, engaged human beings, acting with integrity. Act in honour, do no harm covers everything and makes us all equal.
This was my own personal great insight – it will be different for everyone. As I said, this conference is the good medicine we all need right now. So if you are feeling distressed about the future, if you are feeling like you are ‘screaming into the void’, as one commenter on this Substack put it, then as a doctor, may I prescribe this conference.
If you didn’t have the chance to attend, the good news is you still can: virtual tickets are still available so you can watch the event on-demand. There’s a 25% discount too – just apply the code WCHSUBSCRIBER25 when you purchase.
Once again I want to thank the amazing team behind this event. I cannot tell you how hard they worked to make this conference happen. However challenging it got – such as when we lost our venue – they kept going and kept smiling. They’re already talking about how to make the next one even better – they’re unstoppable and they inspire me to keep going too. And, thank YOU for all your support, both moral and material. All support received goes to EbMCsquared CiC, the non-profit company that manages the World Council for Health.
By the end of the conference, many people were inspired to take action and asked what they could do. So in my final speech, I shared my love of birds – and in particular, of the humble pigeon. These much-misunderstood birds are intelligent, friendly messengers: I asked everyone to be the carrier pigeons of the Better Way – to fly out into the world and spread the word that there is a better way and we are doing it together.
Dear Tess, Thank you so much to you and your team. I have virtually attended many events over the COVID years but never one that was so inspiring and hopeful. I loved seeing and hearing the emotions of the presenters as they expressed their experience of meeting their heroes and sheroes. It was really moving to realize how important this conference was for these courageous people--and for all of us watching from home. I can't express my deep gratitude for your vision and hard work to bring this to fruition. And I want you to know that I watched Letter to Andrew Hill. I didn't know about it until the conference. It was so touching and so brave of you and doctors Kory and Marik. What could have been different if Andy had only had "the balls" to stand for the truth! There is no choice. We must all do our very best to stand for the TRUTH!
Dear Dr. Tess, my husband and I watched online and it was just what we needed—-encouraging and uplifting. Yes, we have a fight ahead of us, but our warriors are honorable and committed to stopping the harm and evil we are facing, and God is on our side. My husband, a retired 86 year old physician is stunned by what has happened to medicine. He heard your early interview with John Campbell and was so impressed with your integrity and courage. Many thanks for taking a stand and leading the way. You and the others inspire us. May God continue to bless and keep you.
