At the heart of courage, love, and joy, you will find a kernel of pain from which those gifts blossomed.

Before the age of thirteen, Martin Luther King Jr. twice attempted suicide, and Buckminster Fuller discovered the purpose of his life as he stood on a cliff overlooking Lake Michigan at the age of thirty-two:

“In committing suicide, I seemingly would never again have to feel the pain and mortification of my failures and errors, but the only-by-experience-winnable inventory of knowledge that I had accrued would also be forever lost — an inventory of information that, if I did not commit suicide, might prove to be of critical advantage to others, possibly to all others, possibly to Universe.”

Stepping back from the cliff’s edge, he concluded:

“If I take oath never again to work for my own advantaging and to work only for all others for whom my experience-gained knowledge may be of benefit, I may be justified in not throwing myself away. This will, of course, mean that I will not be able to escape the pain and mortification of being an absolute failure in playing the game of life as it has been taught to me.” (https://medium.com/@bbirdwell4711/why-buckminster-fuller-is-more-interesting-than-you-thought-f9d213eb0cb7)

Tess, deep thanks for your sharing your life-changing loss. Throughout my 46-year career in clinical psychology my clients have received my orientation that adversity can enable unprecedented growth, if they allow this. This growth is infinite and can make the difference between existing in the spiral of perceived victimization....or living and growthfully experiencing all aspects of the brief moment of our lifetimes. While a handful of primary care physicians have supported psychodynamically oriented psychotherapy, most physicians (including psychiatrists) have prescribed medications without gathering background information or even consulting with the treating therapist. Over the past 3 1/2 years I have prayed that as people contend with chaos, betrayal, economic turbulence, and pandemic sickness and death ... rather than live in fear they will activate themselves to learn and grow in every sense in pursuit of health and freedom. Samson, Mom is a warrior in epitomizing this for humanity.

Thank you, Tess for sharing this beautiful tribute to Samson. You will never meet all the souls you've helped for sharing your story. Personally, I was not given the time to grieve my losses. I was just expected to carry on. But grief cannot be ignored. It eventually surfaces and must be dealt with. It was the Lord who gave me the strength to carry on when family and friends chose to walk away, thus I have chosen to be there for others if and when they want me to be a part of their healing journey. 🙏🏼✝️🙏🏼

Tess, thank you for sharing this difficult story that has shaped your past and present so deeply. Sometimes I think we as a species have lost our way on the path of humanity, but as with many things, keeping our memories intact allows us to find our way back. I hope we can do that in the context of this new crises we are in; your consistant and caring way of being is very precious to me.
